This possibly needs to be stated and re-stated. It was a challenging year as the Head of State noted when appointing the new judge Paul Geoghegan, and President Lonsdale said he "looks forward to the continuous support and cooperation of the judiciary in upholding the nation's justice system." A new X-ray machine has been handed over to Airports Vanuatu Limited (AVL) for use at Bauerfield International by NZ High Commissioner Georgina Roberts through the NZ AVSEC Pacific Security Fund. Getting properly back underway again at Bauerfield, following the nonsense of recent years, will be greatly appreciated by the traveling public – not that X-ray deficiency had anything to do with risks on the tarmac. Education policy in Vanuatu indicates that children of 6 years should go to class 1. Statistics show that many of a higher age have not yet begun attending school so the Education Ministry is beginning a campaign to ensure youngsters of 6 begin their education at the correct age for starting to learn reading and writing and arithmetic. Some Facebook accounts are alleged to be the responsibility of the Prime Minister. He has had to go to some length to make it known he has never had a Facebook account. Yesterday, too, PWD Minister Jotham Napat made it clear the 101 large drums of tar formerly on Malekula were never shipped to that island for road works there. Nor were they re-directed to Tanna. They were simply intended for Vila for street work in the capital. Certainly today the roads in the capital have good coverage with a page 1 photo in the Daily Post of what's going on in the seaside Kalsakau Drive. bobmakin | April 1, 2016 at 11:29 am | Tags: aviation, Bauerfield, education, judiciary, politics, roads, social media, Vanuatu | Categories: The Daily Digest | URL: http://wp.me/p2A4RK-11R Comment    See all comments Unsubscribe to no longer receive posts from Vanuatu Daily Digest. Photo: supplied   Finance Minister Gaetan Pikioune this morning tabled the Vt 19 billion 2016 appropriation bill in Parliament as the eleventh House sat for the first time to debate legislation. The Opposition objected to what it saw as the Government bulldozing though — because of numbers – an expenditure budget increased upon what it had prepared, presumably when in power. They were unable to see any valid reason for the increase. Yesterday was International Day of Happiness; today is International Day of Forests, as Jude Tabi from the Dept of Forests tells us in the video below. The theme of this year's event is forests and water, highlighting how protecting forests protects our water supply – a message that resonates with many in Vanuatu after Cyclone Pam. Vanuatu has a severe weather warning from near midday today. Low pressure to the near west of Vanuatu extends a trough to New Caledonia and the system is moving in a ESE direction. It is likely to bring heavy rain and thunder to most parts of Vanuatu and there may be flash flooding in certain areas. Winds inland (40-50 km/hr) may affect central and southern parts of the country as the system approaches. The potential for this system to develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 5 days is very low (<10%). Politicians and media alike, we must all get our facts right. There have been various observations concerning the now vacant PM's office once being the French Resident Commissioner's residence. It never was. It was always his office and his house is what became State House at Independence, slightly higher on the hill and a wreck since Cyclone Uma. The question arises with the statements being made at the time of the PMO transfer ceremony to its new interim location, what was Sky Garden hotel. And another media mistake. The 11 in prison for bribery did not plead guilty to conspiracy charges as this news site stated, reporting from other news media, Saturday. Their pleas are all "not guilty" and the conspiracy relates to their meeting at a hotel to arrange their "pardon" by Marcellino Pipite. Daily Post today has an excellent piece on the Lapetasi wharf development for the capital. bobmakin | March 21, 2016 at 3:46 pm | Tags: forests, politics, severe weather, Vanuatu | Categories: The Daily Digest, Weather | URL: http://wp.me/p2A4RK-10e Comment    See all comments Unsubscribe to no longer receive posts from Vanuatu Daily Digest. Radio Vanuatu has just completed a talkback show in which explanations for the food dumping from NDMO were at least understandable, but on their own admission they still have a lot to learn. A statement from PM Charlot Salwai concerning the recovery and economic strengthening phase and projects already underway with the new government watching (some 20 in all) only make it to page 9 of Daily Post. They are a cut-out-and-keep reminder to all journalists of excellent projects for such as curriculum materials, school reconstruction and recovery of water supplies. And many others. Best of all, the PM has appointed media heavyweight Johnny Koanapo, a parliamentary secretary, to speed up the recovery phase. And PM Salwai calls upon everyone to play his part. "Delays in the process of recovery and economic strengthening phase are not acceptable."
