It's been on the cards for a long time, but present leaders (some facing bribery charges which are nothing to do with the new wharf) joined more senior personalities in the ceremony. The VT 10 billion JICA project is intended to rationalise the use of Port Vila Harbour. It is welcomed by inter-island and cruise shipping industries and the IPDS group of Ifira companies which are part of the public/private partnership responsible. All daily media have covered the story well. Daily Post today has an extremely interesting front page headline indicating that MP Prasad and Minister Telukluk along with Chinese businessman (and former Vanuatu diplomat) Ruihua Yao have been engaged in a business which illegally imports cigarettes from China to Tapussia Store at Luganville. Prosecutions is mow involved. Prosecutions has a busy time with the new Public Prosecutor still only likely to settle into office on 16 August now. Tristan Garae has been appointed Public Prosecutor to hold the fort whilst John William Timakata presses the cases against 17 Members of Parliament implicated in the huge bribery scandal in which the Deputy Prime Minister seems to face the majority of the charges arising from payments made to MPs during October and November last year.
