Tropical Cyclone Warning Number 3 issued by the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department, Port Vila at 9:16am VUT Tuesday 23 February 2016 for TAFEA province, particularly Aniwa, Futuna, Aneityum and east of Tanna. At 8:00am local time today, Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston (950hPa) Category 3, was located at 18.8 degrees South 172.7 degrees East. Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston is positioned at bottom right of the square letter L, Number 8 (L,8) of the Vanuatu Tropical Cyclone Tracking Map. This is about 370 KM east northeast of Tanna and 340KM east northeast of Aneityum. Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston has moved in a southeast direction at 10KM/HR (6knots) in the past 3 hours. Winds close to the center of the system are estimated at 155KM/HR (85knots). Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston is forecast to be at 20.0 degrees South 173.5 degrees East within the next 06 to 12 hours. Strong to gale force winds of 65 to 75 KM/HR is affecting TAFEA province particularly Aniwa, Futuna, Anietyum and eastern part of Tanna Island. The Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) advises that Red Alert is now in effect for TAFEA province particularly the islands of Aniwa, Futuna, Aneityum and east Tanna. For action on this alert, call NDMO on 22699 or 33366. The next warning on Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston will be issued at 12:00pm. People over TAFEA should listen to all Radio Outlets to get the latest information on this system.
